Hey, Im kinda new here but I have a real bad shoulder pain and cant sleep at night and tylenol doesnt work. what does a guy have to do to hold a job get some sleep and keep the pain at bay? The doc wont give me painkillers and the surgeon says he might be able to fix it. Do these shoulder surgeries work or do I come out worse. Anyone had shoulder surgery and was it sucessful or did you just go with the painkillers? need a second opinion. max

Hi Max,
How did you initially injure the shoulder and where is the pain? Also, have you had any xrays or MRIS performed? That should be a good place to start to get to the bottom of your shoulder pain.
In regards to pain killers, if you need something stronger and your doctor will not prescribe it, try to go to a different doctor or get a referal to a pain management specialist. It is important to propely control the pain if otc meds dont work for you.

I injured the shoulder boxing and weightlifting years ago and the pain is still there. I have had xrays but nothing shows. I have a winging scapula a long thoracic nerve palsy but that is not enough to convince my doctor to prescribe effective pain killers. He keeps sending me to another specialist but it is akward to ask when they keep telling you how dangerous the medicaltion is but they cant help me any other way. How do I tell them I cant stand the pain without sounding like a lunatic? max

Try to get a different doctor or write to the college of physicians and surgeons to complain that youre being denied painkillers by your doctor for a legitimate injury and pain problem. A winging scapula and longthoracic nerve palsy is a painful injury to deal with and limits alot of the mobility of the shoulder and should be treated as a serious problem. The best course of action would be to avoid surgery and manage pain so your doctor should understand this.
